Faculty Work Gallery
This month, we introduced a paper from Prof. Panos Parpas, Reader in Computational Mathematics at Imperial College. If you are interested in showcasing your research, grants, book releases, conference presentations, or any work you deem valuable and interesting to share, please feel free to contact us.
Abstract:
The training of neural networks can be formulated as an optimal control problem of a dynamical system. The initial conditions of the dynamical system are given by the data. The objective of the control problem is to transform the initial conditions in a form that can be easily classified or regressed using linear methods. This link between optimal control of dynamical systems and neural networks has proved beneficial both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view. Several researchers have exploited this link to investigate the stability of different neural network architectures and develop memory efficient training algorithms. In this paper, we also adopt the dynamical systems view of neural networks, but our aim is different from earlier works. Instead, we develop a novel distributed optimization algorithm…

Amazing Work From GEC Students
Each month, GEC will introduce some of our exceptional students’ work in a specific research area to our audiences. This month, we selected two articles from our previous students in the field of Arts.
Reimagining Eighteenth-Century France: An Examination of a Secrétaire by Martin Carlin
This article uses a secrétaire made in 1776 by Martin Carlon as a case study to explore the historical reasons and social symbolism behind the flourishing of this French furniture form in the 18th century. By analyzing the source of raw materials, functional design, and meaning of this secrétaire, this article concludes that the French colonial history, the nobility’s fascination with Oriental art, and the emergence of innovative technology all contributed significantly to the advancement of furniture. In addition, the secrétaire, as a writing instrument, symbolized gender and class and later evolved into a symbol of female literacy, taste, and social status.
The Expression of Female Artists in Intimate Relationships: Marina Abramović’s Expression of Female Emotions in Performance Art
Close relationships play an important role in meeting people’s needs for emotional support, security and belonging. The theory of interdependence states that individuals unconsciously give in relationships to satisfy their partner’s needs, and that this giving is in line with their inner self-awareness, which in turn increases their satisfaction with the relationship. However, this interdependence may also lead people to unconsciously seek more attention and emotional value from their partners. This article discusses why female artists regard the intimate relationship of their partners as the core of their artistic creation, and think that the intimate relationship is an important part of their lives, reflecting their personal life experiences.
